Old engine 3: this 1937 American La France fire
engine served the City of La Crosse Fire Department till
1963 when it was taken out of front line service and
placed in reserve after it was damaged in a accident.
Parked at the scene of a downtown fire is the La
Crosse Police Department's 1949 Packard Ambulance.
The Packard served as La Crosse's front line emergency
ambulance until it was replaced in 1962.

George Brooks and his Blood Hounds assisted local law
enforcement agencies in the solving of many serious
crimes and the finding of lost persons. William
Boma began his career in law enforcement in 1933 with
the La Crosse Police Department. He was appointed
La Crosse County Sheriff after the death of Sheriff E.W.
Voss in 1959. This photo is believed to have been
taken in 1961 while Sheriff Boma was doing an
investigation at the scene of a serious crime.

This late 1930s photo shows the Panke Boat Livery
service located on the Black River off of Copeland Park.
Built in 1891 by Erik Rynning, a north side businessman,
this brick home is now the property of Alex and Lisa D'Angelo.
The wood frame house on the left was built in 1855 by
Silas F. Nice and served as a home for him and his family.
Mr. Nice was a carpenter who built houses, many on the
north side. Mr. Nice constructed all the wood
planking on the wagon bridge that was built in La Crosse
in 1891. During the Civil War, Mr. Nice served as
a 2nd Lieutenant, 47th Wisconsin Infantry. The
house is now the property of Kenneth and Constance
Jenkerson. 1400 block of Charles Street looking south.
The church in the background was the Norwegian Baptist
Church, now the New Life Tabernacle. Dedicated on
September 5, 1886 as the Our Savior's Evangelical
Lutheran Church. This church stood on the corner
of 6th and Division. The church was torn down in
1956 to make way for a new church. The Dorcas Society
was organized in 1921 as a Lutheran women's service
group. This photo shows a Greyhound Bus
transporting the Our Savior's Lutheran Church Choir on a
tour. The picture is believed to have been taken
around 1937. 1706 State, the exterior of this house
still looks as it did when these pictures were taken in

Crosse High School was constructed on the corner of 8th
and Main in 1878 and served as a high school until it
was replaced by a new high school building located on
the corner of 16th and Cass. Christ Episcopal Church
built on the corner of Ninth and Main in 1899.
Built in 1891 on the northwest corner of Sixth and
State, this building served the City of La Crosse as a
city hall till it was torn down in 1970. Crossing the
Copeland Avenue Crossing, the Milwaukee Railroad's
Streamlined Hiawatha approaches the Milwaukee Road
Depot. This picture is believed to have been taken
in 1936. A Milwaukee railroad steam engine passes
through the Milwaukee road yards at North La Crosse.

Germania Hall was built on the corner of fifth and
Market Streets in 1892 and served as the social center
for the many German people that lived in La Crosse.
This building was torn down in 1966 to make way for a
new fire station. First Evangelical Lutheran Church
built in 1905. Market Square, picture taken around
1936. Immanuel Lutheran Church corner of Avon and St.
Paul Streets built in 1906. Salzer Memorial
Methodist Church was dedicated on December 9, 1895.
This church stands on the corner of Seventh and Ferry.
The building now serves as a Baptist Church. St.
Joseph the Workman Cathedral was built by a German
congregation in 1869. This church served as the
Cathedral for the Diocese of La Crosse until 1959 when
it was town down to make way for a new cathedral. This
unique building first served as a home for the Heilmann
family after being built in the early 1850's over the
years it served as a bottle house and later as a office
building for the brewery in the early morning hours of
December 12, 1959 a fire destroyed this landmark. The
lights burned bright at the new La Crosse Tribune in
1939, fast breaking new stories of the outbreak of World
War Two were being received at a fast pace. One of La
Crosse's first A and W Root Beer stands stood on the 300
block of Jay Street. This Picture is believed to have
been taken during the dedication of the new Cass Street
bridge in September of 1939. Peerless Beer was
brewed by the Michel Brewery located on the seven
hundred block of south Third. |
