To The Public.
For more than twenty-five years
I have been prominently before
the public as a business college
owner and manager, and during
that time my name has never been
connected with an inferior school,
nor have I ever attempted to secure
patronage by making false
statements or misleading promises,
nor by offering cheap tuition or
cheap board.

My constant aim has been to make
my schools the representatives of
their class; thorough, practical,
modern and worthy of the confidence,
esteem and patronage accorded
them. How well I have
succeeded I will leave for others
to say, believing that the unequaled
success of my graduates
and the unbiased opinion of their
employers, is, to intelligent people
far better proof of superiority
than the unsupported self-praise
and exaggerated claims of
excellence for which most business
schools are noted.

In conclusion I will state that
I desire only the patronage of
those who judge a school by the
results secured by its graduates
and who know that “the best is
also the cheapest;” preferring a
limited number of bright, intelligent
students whom I can locate in
desirable positions, to filling my
schools to overflowing, with that
very undesirable class, who consider
cheap board and cheap tuition
of greater importance than the
character and quality of the education
offered, and who have yet
to learn that “cheap” is the trade
mark of insecurity and fraud, and
that “just as good at half the
price” is the never ceasing cry of
imitators and counterfeiters.
Respectfully,
F. J. Toland

Judge by Results.
This little book contains, in brief
form, the information generally requested
by prospective students
and I believe that any intelligent
person after reading it will be convinced
that my schools offer advantages
and inducements to those
desiring an education that will enable
them to secure permanent and
profitable employment, that are
duplicated by no other school.

It also contains the portraits,
names and positions occupied, by several
hundred of my formal students
whose combined salaries is in excess
of $360,000 per year.

Before attending my schools, these
young people were inexperienced
country boys or girls, school teachers,
clerks or laborers; idle or engaged
at irksome uncongenial employment,
at wages that barely sufficed
for the necessaries of life.

That which my schools have done
for others they now offer to do for
you, and that which others have
done, you can do.

June l2th 1902.
Mr. F. J. Toland,
La Crosse, Wis.
Dear Sir:-
I have your letter of the 11th inst., and in answer, will say,
that I entered the Wisconsin Business University because I considered it
the best business training school in existence.

I arrived at that conclusion first, through the opinion expressed by
my friends who had attended your school and who were filling difficult and
profitable positions. Second, through the advice of business men who
vouched for the character of your school, the success of your graduates,
and your own character and financial standing, and last, from your catalogue
which contained the portraits and positions occupied by hundreds
of your graduates, the commendatory statements of business men throughout
the country, and your own brief and business-like statements concerning
methods, courses of study, rates of tuition, etc., instead of the usual
claims of “biggest,” “cheapest,” “thousands of graduates employed,” and
other bombastic, self-flattering statements which constituted the subject
matter of the catalogues sent me by other schools.

That I made no mistake, is shown by the fact that when I applied for
my present position, my employer stated that the position "could be filled
only by an experienced stenographer." I had had no experience other than
that acquired in the W.B.U. and yet I filled the position to the satisfaction
of my employer from the start and have had my salary raised three
times.

It is also to your credit, that since employing me, this firm has
employed and now has in their office in this city, five other students
from your school, and I am informed that whenever they need clerical help
they will call on you for same.

Trusting that I have fully and satisfactorily answered your letter,
I am,
Your friend and former student,

General Information
Management.
As the management, equipment, courses of study,
rates of tuition, and methods, are practically
the same in all of my schools, the information
herein contained applies to each.

I am sole owner of the schools herein described and the work of
all students and teachers is under my supervision and is subjected to
frequent and careful inspection.

Equipment and Location.
All of my schools are centrally located, easy of access,
well lighted, and equipped with oak furniture,
made to order. The furniture in banks, offices and
typewriting departments was made especially for my
schools, and is hardwood throughout. The banking and office departments
are unsurpassed, and contain practical and up-to-date office
devices found in no other schools. The typewriting departments are
equipped with No. 6 and No. 7 Remington typewriters, mimeographs,
copying presses and tabulators. The interior views herein published
are made from photographs of a few of the departments. Please
compare with interior views from other schools.

Teachers and Methods.
My teachers are the best that money can secure,
bright, wide-awake business men, who combining
years of practical experience as bookkeepers and stenographers,
with thorough and minute technical knowledge,
prepare their students to meet the most exacting requirements
of business men as soon as graduated, a result impossible in schools
that employ theoretical teachers who have not had actual experience
as accountants or stenographers

The majority of my managers and teachers have been in my employ
from four to fourteen years.

As my teachers know, from practical experience, just what business
men require of their employees, no
time is wasted upon theoretical, textbook
nonsense, nor at "playing business."
Their work is based upon the actual requirements
of every day business as practiced
by the largest firms and corporations
in this country, and each days work
is carried on through practical transactions
that have been thoroughly tested
and approved by business men.

In addition to the instruction offered
by other schools my students are thoroughly
drilled in "voucher," "loose leaf"
and other up-to-date forms, also in the
everyday duties and details of office practice—
press copying, filing, indexing and
manifolding, and familiarized with the use
of modern office devices.
18

The Banking is conducted exactly the same as in any modern bank
of non-issue and hundreds of my graduates are now employed as
cashiers and bookkeepers in such institutions. Shorthand students
are also given actual office experience and so thoroughly familiarized
with their duties that they fill the most difficult positions from the
start, as is conclusively proven by the statements of their employers
herein published.

Special Offers.

paying for any graduating course before September
2, 1902.

Where two students enter from the same family same season
and pay tuition on entrance, a discount of $5.00 will be allowed on one
scholarship. Any student inducing another non-resident student to
enter for a full course will be allowed $5.00 commission for each
student secured for any graduating course. To secure commission
send for special blank.

Free car fare to students residing a distance of from 100 to 200
miles from the school they desire to attend providing they pay on
entrance and waive all other special offers. Always write for instruction
as to route, etc., otherwise car fare will not be allowed.

Board and Lodging.
I have made special arrangements whereby my
students can secure board and lodging at as low
rates as in any cities of similar size in the United
States.

Students are guaranteed good board and lodging, steam or furnace
heat and modern conveniences, with private families, at from
$12.00 to $14.00 per month. Many of my students secure board
and lodging at from $8.00 to $10.00* per month and claim that it is
satisfactory in every respect.

Male students, entering during Fall Term, can frequently secure
board and lodging in exchange for light service—attending to horse,
furnace, or other chores.

Time to Enter.
Fall Term begins first Tuesday in September.
Winter Term, first Monday in November. Mid-
Winter Term, first Tuesday in January. Spring Term
first Monday in March.

Students can, however, enter any of my schools at any time during
the school year, as each student receives individual instruction
and is not dependent upon others for advancement.
There is not a week from the
September opening until June, that new
students do not enter; but it is advisable,
for those who can, to enter in September,
as the attendance is smaller during the
Fall Term and teachers can devote more
time to each student.

Lost time, by sickness or unavoidable
absence, can be made up at any time without
extra expense; but no allowance will
be made for unnecessary absence.

Students must secure permission from
office for leave of absence and promptly
report on return.
20

Examinations.
Students are not required to pass examination on
entrance. Those deficient in any of the common
branches receive special individual instruction, adapted
to their requirements, without the publicity of class recitation.

Examinations for advancement or graduation are given whenever
the student has completed the required work, and depend wholly
upon the student's ability and industry. No student is held back
to wait for less industrious students.

Graduation.
Time required to graduate, depends upon the student's
ability, industry and previous education.
I have had students complete the Business Course in fourteen weeks.
I have also had students that required nine months for the same
work. The average time, however, is about six months.

A Diploma is awarded to each student finishing any of the prescribed
courses in a satisfactory manner; but owing to the pernicious
system so much in vogue, of distributing diplomas with but slight
regard for the proficiency of the pupil at the end of the course, I
issue these evidences of merit with great caution; and only when they
are deserved. The diploma is a beautiful specimen of artistic pen
work, prepared especially for my schools. No charge is made for
the diploma, but students are expected to pay the actual expense of
having it artistically filled, which costs me from fifty cents to one
dollar, depending upon the amount of work desired. Certificates
are issued to students finishing the Initiatory Business Course,
and to students securing sufficient speed in shorthand and typewriting
for ordinary office work.

Positions for Graduates.
During the past year I have secured positions for
one hundred and fifty students, and fully as
for many more have secured employment directly or indirectly
through my influence. In addition to this I
have received at least fifty calls for graduates
that I could not fill.

The uniform success of my graduates
in securing positions insures my students
assistance in that respect, given by
no other school, it also justifies me in asserting
that in the future, as in the past,
I can secure positions for every student
who excels, and who is honest, industrious
and of good character.

Investigation will satisfy the reader that this catalogue
shows more students holding first-class positions than are
shown in the combined catalogues of all other business
schools in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa combined, and yet, in
addition, I have in my office a list of nearly 1,400 more who
are filling equally good positions.
71

The Demand For My Graduates.
During the past twelve months I have sent 154 students to positions.
Nearly as many more have secured employment directly, or indirectly, through
my assistance, and during January/February and March I received a great
many requests for bookkeepers and stenographers that I could not fill. The
following list of positions I could not fill gives only those that offered $50.00,
or more, per month:
J. B. Streeter & Co., Larimore, N. Dak. - - - $100.00 per month
G. N. R. R., St. Paul, Minn. - - - - - - - - 100.00 "
G. N. R. R., St. Paul, Minn. - - - - - - - - - 65.00 "
C. M. & St. P., La Crosse, - - - - - - - - - - 75.00 "
Lund Land Co., Canby, Minn. - - - - - - - - - 75.00 "
McCormick H. M. Co., St. Cloud, Minn. - - - - 75.00 "
Warder, Bushnell & Gleesner, St. Cloud, Minn. 65.00 "
Reeves & Co., Grand Porks, N. Dak - - - - - - 50.00 "
Studebaker Bros., South Bend, Ind. - - - - - - 65.00 "
Swift & Co., St. Paul, Minn. - - - - - - - - - 50.00 "
Julius Patck, Ironwood, Mich - - - - - - - - - 60.00 "
C. & N. W. R. R., Boone, Iowa - - - - - - - - 55.00 "
Ross Lumber, Co., Arbor Nitae, Wis. - - - - - 50.00 "

That other schools realize the ability of my graduates is attested by the
following list of schools that applied to me for teachers of bookkeeping or shorthand,
after all thoroughly competent students had secured employment.
International Business College Saginaw, Mich.
High School Marquette, Mich.
Copper City Business College. Anaconda, Mont.
Englehorn Business College Helena, Mont.
Modern Business College Cleveland, Ohio.
Columbian University, Lancaster, Ohio.
High School Shamokin, Pa.
Business College Beaver Falls, Pa.
Business College Santa Barbara,Cal.
Agricultural College Pulham, Wash.
Ottumwa Business College Ottumwa, Iowa.
Business College Iowa City, Iowa.
College of Commerce Kenosha, Wis.
Business College Lola, Kansas
Business College Tuscola, Ill.
Business College Quincy, Ill
Business College. Grand Forks, N. D.

The Difference.
Person of intelligence can avoid noticing
the difference both in the character and number
of positions occupied by my graduates and those
occupied by the graduates of my would-be competitors.
The positions occupied by my graduates are
first-class, paying liberal salaries and requiring a
thorough and complete knowledge of bookkeeping,
or shorthand and typewriting; while the few positions
held, according to their own letters, by the students of my imitators,
are, in nearly every instance, petty clerkships in country or village stores.

At the present time I have nearly 300 students employed in Chicago
alone, and the fact that such representative institutions as Marshall Field
& Co., Fairbanks, Morse & Co., Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co., Jno. M. Smythe
& Co., A. McKenzie & Co., Armor Elevator Co., Swift Packing Co., Lord
& Thomas, Studebaker Bros. Mfg. Co., employ and recommend my
students, makes comment unnecessary.

Another marked difference between my schools and other schools, is
the unquestionable responsibility of those who endorse my schools and
commend my students, and the fact that I prove every claim I make. The
superiority of my equipment is shown by cuts made direct from photographs.
My responsibility is vouched for by every banking institution in
the cities in which my schools are located. The assistance I render students
is clearly proven by the letters from students herein published, and the fact
that I do prepare my students for actual business life, is attested by letters
from many of the largest business houses in America.

Cheap Schools.
In selecting a school young people should use great
care. Never select a school because it is "cheap" nor
because it is near home. Your future depends very much
upon the school you attend. Cheap schools should be avoided.
The patronage of cheap schools does not justify the employment of first-
class teachers and cheap teachers mean cheap, superficlal instruction. Further
than this, the influence of a good school will aid you greatly in securing
employment. A school that has hundreds of graduates in all of the large
cities, wields a powerful influence for its students. The difference in tuition
between the best and the cheapest schools is but a few dollars. The
difference in results secured cannot be estimated. It is the difference between
an assured success and failure.
73

MONEY THROWN AWAY.
I attended school at M-, Mo., for six months,
but after leaving soon learned that I was unable to
hold even an ordinary position. In the fall of 1898, I
entered your school at La Crosse, where I was not only
prepared for the most difficult work, but you also sent
me to a first-class position, which I have no difficulty in
filling.

As your former office stenographer, I know that the
demand for your graduates is generally in excess of the supply. I will always
commend your schools. Ada A. Sprague,
Stenographer, Carnegie Steel Co., Chicago.

Having had several month's experience in one of the leading business
colleges in St. Paul, where they utterly failed to prepare me for
practical work, I can appreciate the superiority of your work, knowing from
practical experience that you prepare your students for the most difficult
work, and that those who are worthy, are invarlably located in desirable
positions.

I received instruction in your school which thoroughly fitted me for
any office position and learned many practical things, which I do not believe
are taught in any similar school.

While in your office, I know th
