Debate followed, whether the gift could be used for the purchase of a lot, or whether it was solely for the erection of the building. A committee was appointed to confer with the donors. No further report appears in the minutes, so it is probable that the offer was withdrawn. September 13, 1857-A Committee was appointed to prepare plans and present costs for fencing 1/4 acre. March 14, 1858-Committee reported cost of fence $6.00 for 60 posts, and lumber at $16.50 per thousand feet. John Richards was hired to erect fence for $15.00. June 6, 1858-L. Straus was admitted to membership, and two mem- bers were expelled for nonpayment of dues. August 22, 1858-P. H. Prager offered resolution that the Society in- corporate under the laws of Wisconsin. No action taken. Leopold Wach- enheimer was admitted to membership. No records between September 19, 1858 and October 11, 1862. October 11, 1862-L. Wachenheimer, President. New names appear; Simon Neuman, S. Steinam, M. Schwalbe. Ordered trees planted and oth- erwise beautify and improve burial ground. Another gap to January 7, 1866. Minutes now switch to German script, almost illegible. Under the same secretary, Jos. Gutman, records continue to 1889 when a new secretary was chosen. October 6, 1889-Mons Anderson offered 3 acres adjoining cemetery at $150.00 per acre. Instructed committee to offer him $250.00 for 3 acres. It is significant that there was no change in per acre price of sand hills outside city limits between July 12, 1857, date of purchase of the original acre, and this date 32 years later! -82-
