EARLY ROUTES OF TRAVEL St. Croix River was transferred to the La Crosse and Milwaukee Rail- road. Immediately following this the work on the road was hurried and the year 1858 found the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad complete to La Crosse. In 18,59 the Daily Union and Democrat carries an advertise- ment stating that the "cars" run daily except Sunday and the trip to Milwaukee is being made in ten hours.15 The La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad was only the first of the systems which afterwards came into La Crosse and it seems strange that in such a short period of years the country that did not have good roads provided for its settlers was connected with the rest of the country by such quick means of trans- portation.
