LA CROSSE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES of these expeditions that he gathered the following data on the vicinity of La Crosse. Nicollet, I. (Joseph) N. Report Intended To Illustrate a Map of the Hydro- graphical Basin of the Upper Mississippi. Washington. 1841. P. 122. "Mouth of the Prairie de la Crosse river: 3 miles north from the mouth of the Hokah (Root) River. 2,004 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi. North latitude, 43 degrees, 49 minutes. Longitude, 91 degrees, 14 minutes west. "Black River (Sappah), old mouth: 683 feet altitude above the Gulf of Mexico. 31 [an error; 10 mi.] miles from the mouth of the La Crosse River. 2,035 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi. North latitude, 43 degrees, 57 minutes, 14 seconds. "Dividing ridge between LaCrosse and Black Rivers: 6 miles east of the Mississippi and 1,103 feet altitude above the Gulf." No exact date is given for these observations, but it is probable that they were taken between 1836 and 1839, since Nicollet made sim- ilar observations, he says, between St. Louis and St. Peter's during those years. The following books by travellers who must have passed the site of La Crosse were examined and found to contain no mention of the place. Carver's Travels In Wisconsin, from the Third London Edition. N. Y. 1838. Marryatt, Capt. A Diary in America. Philadelphia. 1839. Schoolcraft, Henry R. Travels in the Central Portion of the Mississippi Valley. N. Y. 1825. Schoolcraft, H. R. Narrative of an Expedition Through the Upper Missis- sippi to Itaska Lake. N. Y. 1834. Schoolcraft, H. R. Summary Narrative of an Exploratory Expedition to the Sources of the Mississippi River.
