LA CROSSE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES charge providing the board would employ her regularly if her method suited them. Apparently her method was accept- able, for she taught until 1887. She was followed by Mary Hofer. Helen Berry, Nellie Loomis, Katherine. Bruce, Eleanor Swain, Rose Hoff, Bar- bara Russell, Martha Rollins, Ida Mc- Lean, Alice Keith, Stella Trane, Bar- bara Russell Whelpley, Lulu Parsons, Margery Sprester, and Beatrice Per- ham. Prof. Albert Hardy became super intendent in 1880, and in his first an- nual report to the board of education he said, "In drawing and music, a long step forward was made during the year. What is said of drawing as an educational force and an esthetic in- fluence is true also of music, al- though, perhaps in a different way. Music has a refining, elevating influ- ence, thus aiding greatly in govern- ing the schools. Its systematic study demands the close attention of the student, the exercise of his observ- ing powers, and his memory and rea- soning faculties, and, thus, it becomes an educational force of no mean order. Further, it trains the voice, develops and strengthens the lungs, and great- ly promotes the health." 0 THE BINGO CLUB Reproduced from an ambrotype.
