A BLACK RIVER PINERY LUMBER CAMP The early prosperity of La Crosse was founded upon the lumber industry, and particularly upon the exploitation of the Black River Pinery. This illus- tration of a typical lumber camp reproduces one of a collection of views presented to the La Crosse Teachers College by Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Tiffany. It represents a camp of the Island Mill Lumber Company on the East Fork of the Black River in the late 1880's.
