PREFACE
This checklist of La Crosse hotels and motels was compiled
from city directories, newspaper listings, published histories,
state and regional gazetteers, and other miscellaneous sources.
Student assistants Carolyn Nelson and Donna Rumppe provided most
of the names through routine searching. Virginia Kreyer, employed
in the Area Research Center through a State Historical Society of
Wisconsin CETA grant, added names and information resulting from
her index of Benjamin Bryant's Memoirs of La Crosse County (1907).

The list includes 227 entries, dating from the earliest
settlement period in the 1840*5 to 1967. Arrangement is alphabetical.
Approximate dates of activity are included in most cases, as are
street addresses. Some entries, especially those for contemporary
motels, are for businesses located outside the city limits; these
businesses used a La Crosse mailing address.

In any such compilation, errors and omissions are unavoidable.
The staff of the Area Research Center will make appropriate revisions
as additional information becomes available.

I am grateful to the. compilers for their thorough and careful
efforts. Their work will provide a useful research tool for anyone
interested in this aspect of local history.
