1985 PREFACE

The first compilation of this checklist appeared
in 1977, and was prepared by student assistant Carolyn
Nelson. Since that time, a number of additional sources
have become available. Published histories of Lutheran
Hospital and St. Francis Hospital appeared in 1981 and
1982, respectively. Both contain substantial lists of
physicians employed by those hospitals. Other supplementary
lists were acquired by Murphy Library, and a
number of early practitioners were found in printed
materials added to the library collections. Practitioners
from the period of the 1940s to the present were added
to bring the checklist up to date.

I am indebted to Linda Sondreal for her thorough
efforts in bringing this checklist to its present status.
Early entries have been corrected and expanded, and the
overall listing has approximately doubled in size over
the 1977 compilation.

The reader is cautioned that many of our sources
are erratic in coverage and accuracy. We have made every
effort to make this checklist as accurate as possible,
but errors will inevitably occur.

Special mention should be made of the work of student
assistant Paula Wilson, who in 1983 and 1984 solicited
considerable current information through questionnaires.
