LA CROSSE ARCHITECTS
A CHECKLIST OF ARCHITECTS IN THE CITY OF LA CROSSE
FROM 1853 to 1973

Compiled by Carolyn Nelson

General Editor
Edwin L. Hill

Area Research Center Checklist Series
Number Two

Murphy Library

1977

PREFACE
In this checklist of La Crosse architects, student assistant
Carolyn Nelson has concentrated on the firms and offices rather
than on individual employees. It may be safely assumed, for
example, that Parkinson and Dockendorff employed many
architects during the nearly fifty years of that firm's operation.
Unless those employees later became partners or sole owners
of another firm, they will not appear in this checklist.

Dates given are for years of activity for the architect or
firm, within the city of La Crosse.

In some cases, persons listed here may not have been
licensed, trained architects. In the 1850*3 and 1860's, an early
practitioner could call himself anything he chose. It is questionable,
for example, whether J. C. Bennett was in fact an architect,
or simply a draftsman with experience and aspirations.

This checklist was compiled during the 1976-77 academic year,
using the resources of Murphy Library1 s Area Research Center.
A bibliography follows this preface.

This checklist is the second in a projected series. It represents
the wider contributions to local history research by the
Center staff, whose daily work is made simpler by such compilations.
